Mice deficient in gephyrin develop a hereditary molybdenum cofactor deficiency and a neurological phenotype that mimics startle disease (hyperekplexia). In non-neuronal tissues, the encoded protein is also required for molybdenum cofactor biosynthesis. Two isoforms produced by alternative splicing have been described.
