NCX1 is a bidirectional ion exchanger that can exchange sodium and calcium ions between the inside and outside of cells in a 1:3 ratio (1 Ca2+ ion and 3 Na+ ions). Under physiological conditions, NCX1 mainly transports Ca2+ from the cell interior to the exterior through the forward transport mode to maintain the low calcium level inside the cell.
