In hematopoietic stem cells, SLC1A5 is necessary for erythroid cell differentiation. During placenta development, SLC1A5 serves as the receptor of syncytin-1 to stimulate trophoblast syncytialization. SLC1A5 is highly expressed in multiple cancers by positively regulating c-Myc, mTOR, and MAPK-PI3K signaling pathways to support tumor cell chemoresistance and cell growth.
