TFAP2A is active in the neural crest and regulates a group of cells in the early embryo that give rise to many tissues and organs, including bones and other tissues of the head and neck. In humans, TFAP2A mutation causes Branchio-oculo-facial syndrome (BOFS). In kidney development, TFAP2A functions in distal nephron development dictating the progression of cells towards a fully differentiated state. TFAP2A is also involved in carcinogenesis and is highly expressed in various types of cancer, including bladder cancer, melanoma, head and neck squamous carcinoma, gastric cancer, ovarian cancer, lung adenocarcinoma, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
