It is primarily localized to the outer mitochondrial membrane and the cytoplasm. FSP1\/AIFM2 catalyzes electron transfer reactions, which help regulate cellular oxidative stress. Under normal physiological conditions, FSP1\/AIFM2 contributes to maintaining cellular redox balance and supports cell viability. When overexpressed or under conditions of metabolic or oxidative stress, FSP1\/AIFM2 can trigger caspase-independent apoptosis characterized by chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation. The antioxidant function of FSP1\/AIFM2 suggests its dual roles in cell survival, which shifts between promoting and preventing cell death depending on cellular context and environmental stimuli.
