It catalyzes the first step in the alpha-oxidation of phytanic acid, a branched-chain fatty acid. Mutations in this gene can cause Refsum disease (RD) and deficient protein activity can cause Zellweger syndrome and rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata.
