The protein is mainly localized in the outer mitochondrial membrane and expressed in steroid-synthesizing tissues (PMID:32881658, PMID:1326278). TSPO is involved in the translocation of cholesterol from the outer to inner mitochondrial membrane (PMID:21119734). In response to injury, TSPO has a upregulated expression in the peripheral nervous system (PMID:32423330, PMID:23251719).
