It is one of the two identical copies of the CDY1 gene within the AZFc region of the human Y chromosome. As a histone acetyltransferase, CDY1B exhibits a strong preference for histone 4, suggesting its involvement in both spermatogenic histone replacement and DNA transcription. It plays a significant role in the chromatin remodeling of round spermatid nuclei, contributing to the transition from histone-based chromatin to protamine-based chromatin during spermatogenesis. This transition is essential for the condensation of sperm DNA and the formation of mature sperm.
