It can regulate the permeabillity state of outer mitchondrial member (OMM), this regulation is accompanied by the formation of homo- and hetero-oligomers inside the membrane. Hypoxia can lead to transcriptional activation of BNIP3 through HIF-1α (PMID: 11559532). It's calculated molecule weight is 21.5 kDa.
