The formulation contains 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide (MUG), which is cleaved by the enzyme β-glucuronide to release 4-methylumbelliferone exhibiting blue green fluorescence. The inclusion of tryptophan acts as a substrate for indole production. Both reactions are characteristic ofEscherichia coliand can therefore be used to identify presumptiveEscherichia coli.
