The highly volatile byproducts mono(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) and trifluoroacetamide elute with the solvent front to ensure excellent chromatographic separations. This silylation reagent reacts with a wide range of polar compounds and is particularly well suited for the GC analyses of some lower boiling TMS-amino acids and TMS Krebs cycle acids.
