SAH is a by-product in the transmethylation reactions catalyzed by S-adenosylmethionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferases. These methylation reactions are critical to various biological processes. SAH is also a feedback inhibitor of SAM-dependent methyltransferases. By catalyzing the above reaction, AHCY/SAHH plays a crucial role in relieving the inhibition (3). Moreover, studies show that hydrogen sulfide (H S) persulfidates Cys195 on AHCY/SAHH in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and therefore decreases its enzymatic activity, resulting in reduced homocysteine levels. This, in turn, lowers cysteine and glutathione levels in the cell when cystine is depleted, making NSCLC cells more susceptible to ferroptosis (2,4).
Alternate Names
Adenosylhomocysteinase; AdoHcyase; AHCY; epididymis secretory sperm binding protein; S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine hydrolase; S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase; SAHH

Specification

REACTIVITY: H M R
SENSITIVITY: Endogenous
MW (kDa): 45
Source/Isotype: Rabbit IgG
