FATP2\/SLC27A2 also functions as a very long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase in the endoplasmic reticulum to activate very long-chain fatty acids (1). Polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells (PMN-MDSCs) are pathologically activated neutrophils that accumulate in many diseases. The immunosuppressive activity of PMN-MDSCs is critical in regulating immune responses in cancer. Studies show that FATP2\/SLC27A2 expression is upregulated in PMN-MDSCs. FATP2\/SLC27A2 mediates the suppressive activity of PMN-MDSCs by increasing the uptake of arachidonic acid and synthesis of prostaglandin E2. In addition, deletion of FATP2\/SLC27A2 is shown to abolish the suppressive activity of PMN-MDSCs (2).
