Studies show that tricarboxylic acid cycle activity, mitochondrial folate pathway activity, and oxidative stress in mitochondria are not affected when the gene is deleted. However, deletion leads to diminished NADP and NADPH in mitochondria and negatively impacts the reduction of glutamate to pyrroline-5-carboxylate needed for proline biosynthesis.
