HIGD1A and HIGD2A (of 10.4 and 11.5 kDa, respectively) have two hydrophilic transmembrane domains and are localized in the inner mitochondrial membrane. HIGD1A and HIGD2A expression is induced under stress conditions like hypoxia or glucose deprivation in human cervical epithelial cells and murine cerebral cortical neurons. HIGD1A may play pleiotropic roles in mitochondrial respiratory chain biogenesis.
