TLR9 recognizes DNA motifs containing the dinucleotide CG (cytosine-guanine) where the C is unmethylated (CpG-containing DNA). TLR9 is expressed in a wide variety of cells such as B-cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, dendritic cells, macrophages, bronchial epithelial cells, and type-I and type-II lung cells, amongst others. Like all TLRs that recognize nucleic acids, TLR9 is confined to the endoplasmic reticulum and to endolysosomes.
