This domain is homologous to the phospholipase D catalytic domain but lacks essential catalytic histidine residues, suggesting it is unlikely to have phospholipase activity. FAM83G, in particular, has a consensus motif for serine\/threonine protein kinase D1\/protein kinase C mu (PKD1\/PKCμ) phosphorylation at serine residue 356 (S356), which suggests it may have a unique physiological function among the FAM83 protein family members.
