Upon excitation at 320 or 340 nm, energy can be transferred from the donor Europium chelate to the acceptor fluorophore if sufficiently close for FRET (~10 nm). It is a chemoattractant and activator for neutrophils, directing them from periferal blood to the site of inflammation. It is also a potent angiogenic factor promoting endothelial and epithelial migration and proliferation in several cancers, and is associated with metastasis. It signals through two specific G protein-coupled receptors, CXCR1 and CXCR2, sharing ~77% identity.
