Additional Information
ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column, 100Å, 1.8 µm, 2.1 mm X 100 mm, 1/pk Utilize the ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column, the general-purpose silica-based C18 column, across a broad range of compound classes. The column, trifunctionally bonded to the HSS particle substrate, offers excellent peak shapes, and low-pH stability. This is offered in addition to delivering increased retention compared to hybrid-based C18 columns. The Waters HSS (High Strength Silica) particle technology was created to withstand UPLC pressures using a mechanically tolerant, silica-based material. The particle technology behind the Waters HSS (High Strength Silica) is an innovative synthetic process that significantly increases the mechanical stability of silica while maintaining pore volumes similar to that of HPLC silica-based materials. This means that you get increased retentivity compared to hybrid particle technology, and the HSS serves as the ideal substrate to create stationary phases that offer alternate selectivity. The exceptional traits of the ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column mean that you not only meet the challenges of the laboratory, but also that you will be more productive and successful in your work. Use the ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 VanGuard Pre-column, 100Å, 1.8 µm, 2.1 mm X 5 mm, 3/pk to enhance your analytical column"s lifetime. The guard column is a quality piece of lab equipment specially designed to protect your column from any particulate or chemical contaminants and ensure you receive accurate results every time. What types of analyses are ideal for the ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column? The ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column is ideal for high-efficiency separations of small molecules, particularly in pharmaceutical, environmental, and food safety applications. Its high-strength silica (HSS) material and 1.8 µm particle size make it well-suited for UPLC workflows requiring high resolution and sensitivity. This column performs exceptionally well in applications that demand precise and reliable results. It is commonly used for complex mixture analysis, impurity profiling, and quantitative assays where sharp peaks and reproducibility are critical. 2. What makes the HSS (High Strength Silica) material unique for this column? The HSS (High Strength Silica) material used in the ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column is engineered for superior mechanical strength and stability, enabling it to withstand the high pressures of UPLC systems. Unlike traditional silica-based materials, HSS resists particle deformation and maintains performance under demanding conditions. This durability ensures consistent peak shapes and reproducibility, even with extended use. Additionally, HSS material provides excellent retention of polar and moderately hydrophobic compounds, making the column versatile for a wide range of analytical applications. 3. What temperature range is supported by the ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column? The ACQUITY UPLC HSS C18 Column supports a broad temperature range, typically up to 80°C, depending on the mobile phase conditions. Elevated temperatures can enhance analyte diffusion and reduce run times, making the column highly adaptable for temperature-optimized separations. However, care should always be taken to ensure that mobile phase components and analytes are stable under the chosen temperature. Operating within the recommended temperature range ensures consistent performance and extends the column's lifespan.

FAQ
What Is Dwell Volume? By definition, Dwell Volume is the volume of a gradient HPLC system between the mixing chamber and the column inlet and is responsible for the time delay for a gradient. Though this volume exists under isocratic elution, it has no impact on the separation there.

Dwell volume includes the volume of the gradient mixer, the connecting tubing to the pump, the pump head and check-valves, the tubing between the pump and the injector, the injector itself, and the tubing between the injector and the column inlet.

The dwell volume can be measured by running a step gradient from 100% methanol to 100% methanol + 10 mg/L acetophenone. The dwell volume is equal to the time between the injection and half -height of the detector trace, multiplied by the flow rate.
