Bile Aesculin Agar is designed to differentiate between Group Dstreptococciand non-Group Dstreptococci. Group Dstreptococcihydrolyse aesculin to form aesculetin and dextrose. Aesculin hydrolysis is indicative of a positive result. Bile salts in the medium inhibit Gram-positive bacteria other than enterococci/ Group Dstreptococci.
