Endomucin also known as EMCN is a glycoprotein with a molecular mass of approximately 75 kDa. As part of the endothelial glycocalyx endomucin is expressed predominantly in endothelial cells lining blood vessels. This protein is involved in the prevention of leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and regulates cell surface exposure of adhesion molecules. Endomucin’s expression can be detected in tissues with high vascularization such as the heart and lungs.
Biological function summary
Endomucin modulates the vascular permeability and the anti-inflammatory responses of endothelial tissues. It interacts with other proteins within the endothelial cell surface matrix forming a complex with proteoglycans and glycoproteins.
