Cig2 also known as Cdc13 cyclin is a protein with a mass of around 60 kDa. It functions mechanically as an important regulator of the cell cycle particularly in the initiation of DNA replication. Cig2 is part of a family of cyclins and is expressed predominantly in fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The protein forms a complex with Cdc2 to regulate the S phase entry of the cell cycle.
Biological function summary
Cig2 helps control the timing for the initiation of DNA replication contributing to genome stability. Cig2 interacts with Cdc2 kinase to form an active complex that facilitates cell cycle progression ensuring accurate replication processes. The coordination within this complex allows the cell to transition from the G1 phase to S phase monitoring and controlling the replication machinery.
