The ELF2/NERF protein also known as ELF2 or anti-NERF is a transcription factor involved in regulating gene expression. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 65 kDa. ELF2/NERF is expressed in various tissue types including hematopoietic cells and is part of the ETS family of transcription factors know for its DNA-binding properties. Its function is modulated through specific DNA sequences where it promotes or represses transcription.
Biological function summary
ELF2/NERF plays a role in the control of immune response and hematopoietic cell differentiation. The protein is part of a transcriptional complex that interacts with other transcription factors such as GATA proteins. This interaction influences expression of target genes involved in immune response and blood cell formation. Through such actions ELF2/NERF impacts cell lineage commitment and activation.
Pathways
ELF2/NERF is involved in pathways integral to cell growth and development. It's particularly significant in the JAK-STAT signaling pathway which governs cellular proliferation differentiation and apoptosis. In this context ELF2/NERF frequently interacts with proteins like STAT5 which mediates signaling from various cytokines and growth factors ensuring proper cellular responses to external stimuli.
Dysregulation of ELF2/NERF is associated with conditions such as leukemia and autoimmune disorders. In leukemia abnormalities in ELF2/NERF expression affect the regulation of hematopoietic cell differentiation contributing to the uncontrolled proliferation of blood cells. Additionally interactions with other proteins like RUNX1 in blood malignancies influence disease progression highlighting the relevance of ELF2/NERF in disease states.
