The CEP95 protein also known as Centrosomal protein of 95 kDa plays a critical role in centrosome and cilia function. Its molecular mass is approximately 95 kilodaltons as its name suggests. Scientists have identified CEP95 in various human tissues with significant expression levels in centrosomes particularly during cell division. The protein localizes to the centrosome the microtubule-organizing center of cells where it participates in the regulation of cilia and flagella.
Biological function summary
The CEP95 protein interacts within the network important for centriole duplication and ciliogenesis making it an essential component of centrosomal complexes. CEP95 associates with other centrosomal proteins to ensure accurate and efficient centrosome duplication. These interactions help facilitate key processes necessary for the integrity and proper functioning of microtubules and cell division.
Pathways
Scientists have implicated CEP95 in the control of the cell cycle specifically within the centrosome cycle and ciliogenesis pathways. CEP95 works closely with proteins such as CEP152 and CEP192 which coordinate alongside CEP95 to regulate centriole duplication. Misregulation of these pathways can lead to disorders associated with improper cell division and ciliopathies highlighting the protein's significance in maintaining cellular function and stability.
Improper function or expression of CEP95 has been linked to microcephaly and some cancer forms. In microcephaly the relationship between CEP95 and proteins like CEP152 becomes critical as they work together in the centrosome cycle for proper brain development. Similarly disruptions in CEP95 function in cancer can lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation. Therefore CEP95 stands as an important component in understanding the delicate balance of cell cycle regulation and its link to human disease.
