The ZNF179/BFP also known as ZNF312 is a zinc finger protein that acts as a transcriptional regulator. It has a molecular weight of approximately 64 kDa. This protein is mostly expressed in the brain especially in the regions related to cognitive function and memory. ZNF179/BFP contains several C2H2-type zinc finger motifs that enable it to bind to DNA and regulate the expression of target genes.
Biological function summary
ZNF179/BFP functions in neuron development and differentiation. It serves as an important element in chromatin remodeling and acts within a transcriptional complex. This action helps modulate the expression of genes involved in neuronal processes. By regulating these genes ZNF179/BFP influences neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity which are essential for proper brain function.
Pathways
ZNF179/BFP plays a role in neural differentiation and repair processes. It contributes to the neural developmental pathway and interacts closely with other proteins such as REST and CTBP1. These interactions help to fine-tune gene expression during critical stages of brain development and respond to neural damage.
Dysfunctional ZNF179/BFP expression links to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and schizophrenia. Altered levels of this protein can also affect the expression of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) which is associated with Alzheimer's pathology. In schizophrenia modifications in neural development and receptor expression often associated with REST suggest a connection with ZNF179/BFP's regulatory roles.
