It is expected to be located in cell membrane and mitochondrion membrane. It is strongly expressed in kidney, trachea, bone marrow and fetal liver and in several human cancer cell lines, but not in adult liver (PMID: 9426230). The protein functions as a Na+-dependent and pH-dependent high affinity microbial symporter of potent food-derived antioxidant ergothioeine (PubMed:15795384), which transports one sodium ion with one ergothioeine molecule. The calculated molecular weight of SLC22A4 is 62 kDa, the band of 70 kDa is glycosylated (PMID:26724204).
