Acting as a negative regulator of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), it inhibits the activity of enzymes such as MMP-2, MMP-9, and MT1-MMP, thereby regulating the degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The expression of RECK is significantly downregulated in various malignant tumors, and this downregulation is associated with tumor invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis. For example, in gastric cancer, low expression of RECK is correlated with tumor progression and poor prognosis.
