Cyp19a1b also known as aromatase B is an enzyme responsible for the conversion of androgens into estrogens. This process occurs through the aromatization of the A-ring at the C19 position. The mass of aromatase B is approximately 58 kDa. This enzyme is primarily expressed in brain tissue particularly in neurons and glial cells. It plays a similar role to the CYP19A1 enzyme found in humans although cyp19a1b is found in other vertebrates.
Biological function summary
Cyp19a1b functions in the synthesis of estrogens from androgens which is important for regulating estrogen levels. Estrogens synthesized by cyp19a1b are essential for brain development and function. The enzyme is part of a larger protein complex in the endoplasmic reticulum where it interacts with other components for effective estrogen biosynthesis. The activity of this enzyme influences the local production of estrogens which affect both reproductive tissues and certain non-reproductive organs.
Pathways
Cyp19a1b takes part in the estrogen biosynthesis pathway. This pathway is important for the production of estrogens which play roles in various biological processes including reproduction and neuroprotection. Cyp19a1b is closely associated with other steroidogenic enzymes and proteins such as cytochrome P450 family members which help in the synthesis and regulation of steroid hormones.
Cyp19a1b is linked to conditions such as hormone-dependent breast cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Alterations in estrogen levels due to the dysregulation of cyp19a1b could contribute to the progression of these conditions. The enzyme's activity relates to the production and local availability of estrogen impacting disease pathophysiology. Its involvement in the synthesis of estrogens connects it to the estrogen receptor pathways influencing disease development and progression.
