ZIP-13 also known as Zrt- and Irt-like protein 13 or SLC39A13 is a member of the ZIP family of metal ion transporters. It has a molecular weight of about 34 kDa. ZIP-13 functions by importing zinc and iron into cells therefore maintaining cellular metal ion homeostasis. Researchers have found the expression of ZIP-13 in various tissues including skin bone and connective tissues.
Biological function summary
ZIP-13 plays an important role in processes such as development and differentiation. It does not work as part of any known complex but facilitates important cellular functions by ensuring the balance of zinc and iron ions necessary for enzymatic and structural roles in cells. The activity of ZIP-13 has significant implications for the synthesis of proteins and signaling pathways that depend on zinc.
Pathways
ZIP-13 influences important biological cascades including the TGF-beta signaling and BMP signaling pathways which are important for bone and tissue development. ZIP-13 is related to proteins like SMAD4 and BMP receptors through these pathways. By regulating metal ion concentration ZIP-13 indirectly affects downstream elements in these signaling cascades.
ZIP-13 has associations with conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and spondylodysplastic types. Mutations or dysregulation in ZIP-13 can lead to abnormalities in connective tissue formation and maintenance. In Ehlers-Danlos syndrome ZIP-13's interaction with proteins involved in collagen synthesis such as COL1A1 is of particular importance contributing to symptomatic presentations in affected individuals.
