Delta II tubulin also known as Tubulin delta-2 is a component of the microtubule cytoskeleton vital for cell structure and intracellular transport. As an alternate name it is referred to as TUBD2. This tubulin variant has a molecular mass of approximately 53 kDa. Expression of delta II tubulin occurs in specific tissues most notably in the brain where it plays a role in neuroanatomy and neuron functioning. Delta II tubulin features a unique isotype that contributes to the specialized functions of microtubules in cellular processes.
Biological function summary
Delta II tubulin participates in the assembly and dynamics of microtubule structures fundamental for mitosis and meiosis. It is often part of the tubulin complex where it assists in the stabilization of spindle microtubules during cell division. This function is critical in nerve cells where the maintenance of structural integrity and transport accuracy is essential. By achieving this delta II tubulin supports various cellular activities including the movement of organelles and signaling molecules along the axons and dendrites.
Pathways
Delta II tubulin integrates into the intricate microtubule pathways governing cellular division and transport. A significant pathway involving this protein includes the mitotic spindle checkpoint important for chromosome segregation and cell cycle control. It interacts with other tubulin isotypes and mitotic spindle-associated proteins helping ensure accurate chromosomal alignment and segregation. Delta II tubulin also interfaces with kinesin and dynein motor proteins facilitating intracellular transport.
Delta II tubulin has links to neurodegenerative diseases specifically Alzheimer's disease where microtubule disintegration is an issue. The protein's role in maintaining microtubule dynamics becomes disrupted impacting transport processes needed for neuronal health. In addition its altered function relates to certain forms of cancer where improper microtubule assembly affects cell division and tumor progression. The relationship with gamma-tubulin and its involvement in similar pathways can influence the behavior of these diseases at the cellular level.
