TMIGD2 also known as IGPR1 (Immuno-Glycosylation Promoting Receptor 1) is a protein that functions as a transmembrane receptor. It has a molecular weight of approximately 50 kDa. TMIGD2 is expressed on the surface of endothelial cells and some lymphocytes notably T cells. The protein has a specific expression pattern which restricts it to certain tissues indicating its specialized role in cellular communication and interaction.
Biological function summary
This protein functions in the regulation of cell-cell adhesions impacting cell signaling and the maintenance of endothelial barriers. TMIGD2/IGPR1 does not function alone but associates homophilically binding to itself on adjacent cells to mediate cellular communication. This interaction plays a pivotal role in stabilizing intercellular connections which are essential for the proper function of vascular systems. Studies suggest its role in modulating immune cell interactions and migration.
Pathways
TMIGD2/IGPR1 interfaces significantly with the cellular adhesion and immune response pathways. It is involved in adhesive interactions that are integral to the function of these pathways. TMIGD2 interacts with proteins involved in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway influencing angiogenesis and vascular integrity. Additionally it has links to the cell signaling pathways involving integrins which serve as important mediators in cellular attachment and migration.
Research associates TMIGD2/IGPR1 with vascular-related conditions such as atherosclerosis and inflammation-related diseases. Its expression patterns influence endothelial cell response and immune cell trafficking important elements in these conditions. In atherosclerosis the protein's interaction with adhesion molecules like ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 can alter the inflammatory environment influencing disease progression. In inflammatory diseases TMIGD2's modulatory effects on immune cell dynamics can exacerbate or alleviate disease states depending on the context.
