The FUT11 also known as Fucosyltransferase 11 is an enzyme that plays a role in the addition of fucose residues to glycoproteins and glycolipids. The mass of FUT11 typically measures around 47 kDa. It is ubiquitously expressed in various human tissues but higher expression levels are observed in the liver and kidney. FUT11 localizes mainly to the Golgi apparatus where it participates in the modification of substrates involved in cellular recognition and signal transduction processes.
Biological function summary
FUT11 contributes to important cellular mechanisms related to cell-cell adhesion immune response and signaling. As a member of the fucosyltransferase enzyme family it catalyzes the transfer of fucose to N-linked oligosaccharides. This enzymatic action helps to form complex glycoconjugates critical for maintaining cellular functions. FUT11 does not appear to be part of a larger protein complex functioning independently within the glycosylation process.
Pathways
FUT11 is involved in the fucosylation pathway which is a subpathway of glycosylation. This enzymatic process plays a role in creating Lewis antigen structures that are significant in intercellular communications particularly in the immune system. FUT11 interacts with other proteins such as FUT4 and FUT7 which are also part of the fucosylation process impacting the synthesis of these antigens and their downstream effects in cellular signaling and immune responses.
FUT11 is linked to colorectal cancer and congenital disorders of glycosylation. Abnormal FUT11 activity can alter glycosylation patterns promoting tumor progression and metastasis in cancer. In congenital disorders of glycosylation defects in FUT11 may disrupt normal glycan synthesis leading to various developmental and systemic symptoms. In these conditions FUT11 may interact with other glycosyltransferases to exacerbate or mitigate the pathological effects.
