MBOAT2 (Membrane-Bound O-Acyltransferase Domain Containing 2) also known as GBOAT is a member of the MBOAT family of enzymes. It acts mechanically by transferring an acyl group to lysophosphatidylglycerol contributing to the production of specific lipid molecules. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 56 kDa. MBOAT2 is predominantly expressed in the human liver with notable presence also in the brain and lungs where it plays roles in lipid metabolism.
Biological function summary
The protein functions to modulate lipid composition and stability impacting cellular membrane dynamics. It does not seem to form part of a larger complex itself but it interacts with other enzymes involved in lipid biosynthesis such as acyltransferases. Through these interactions MBOAT2 affects processes related to energy storage and cell signaling by influencing lipid signaling pathways and membrane-associated activities.
Pathways
MBOAT2 participates in the glycerophospholipid biosynthesis pathway. This pathway supports the maintenance of membrane structures by contributing to the modification and synthesis of functional lipids. MBOAT2’s activity shows a direct relationship with enzymes like lysophosphatidyl acyltransferase adapting cellular responses related to lipid signal transduction in response to changing metabolic demands.
Defects or dysregulation in MBOAT2 activity can be implicated in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This condition involves abnormal lipid accumulation and metabolism in liver cells. Additionally the protein might play a role in neurological disorders due to its expression in the brain potentially influencing neuronal membrane composition. Studies have identified connections between MBOAT2 and proteins such as PPARα in the context of lipid metabolism disorders suggesting a role in disease modulation through its interactions and enzymatic activity.
