LTV1 is a protein that functions in the assembly of ribosomal small subunits. It is also known as LTV1 homolog and has a molecular mass of approximately 50 kilodaltons. This protein is expressed in the cytoplasm and associated with the pre-40S ribosomal subunit. LTV1 plays a pivotal role in ribosome biogenesis specifically in the maturation and transport of the 40S subunit from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
Biological function summary
LTV1 facilitates the late stages of ribosome assembly. It is an integral component of the ribosomal RNA processing machinery and associates with several other ribosomal proteins and processing factors forming part of the preribosomal complex. LTV1 is essential for the release of assembly factors and processing of the 18S rRNA which are critical steps in producing functional ribosomes necessary for effective protein synthesis.
Pathways
LTV1 participates in ribosome biogenesis and nucleocytoplasmic transport pathways. It interacts with other assembly factors such as RIOK2 and TSR1 to ensure the proper maturation of the 40S ribosomal subunit. These interactions and processes are vital for the downstream translation initiation pathway which influences overall protein production within the cell and cellular growth.
LTV1 links to cancer and ribosomopathy. Disruptions in ribosome biogenesis where LTV1 plays a part can lead to uncontrolled cell growth characteristic of cancer. Additionally mutations or misregulation in LTV1 can contribute to ribosomopathies disorders caused by defects in ribosomal functions. In these conditions LTV1 interacts with proteins implicated in cell cycle control and stress response pathways such as C-MYC which further illustrates its role in connecting ribosome function to disease states.
