Nucleocyte dynein axonemal 1 also known as NDE1 is an important protein involved in cell division mechanics. It weighs approximately 33 kDa. NDE1 is expressed strongly in the brain particularly in neural progenitor cells and helps in maintaining centrosome function and microtubule organization. Due to its role in centrosome attachment NDE1 plays an important role in chromosomal alignment and segregation during cell division.
Biological function summary
NDE1 participates in centrosomal and microtubule functions. It forms a complex with other proteins such as LIS1 and dynein important for spindle positioning in dividing cells. The NDE1 complex ensures the correct orientation and symmetrical division of proliferating cells impacting tissue architecture and brain development. By partnering with these proteins NDE1 helps maintain the structural integrity of mitotic spindles.
Pathways
NDE1 contributes significantly to the cell cycle and neurogenesis pathways. It interacts with the dynein motor complex facilitating dynein-mediated transport and positioning in dividing neurons. Within these pathways proteins such as LIS1 and DISC1 work with NDE1 indicating its broad impact on cellular positioning and neural development. NDE1 helps regulate the pathways which ensure precise cell division and brain formation.
NDE1 has links to microcephaly and lissencephaly. Mutations in NDE1 contribute to microcephaly by disrupting neuronal proliferation and migration. The protein interacts with LIS1 in this disorder which shares roles in neurodevelopment. Similarly lissencephaly characterized by smooth brain structures due to abnormal neuronal migration shows association with NDE1 dysfunction. Therefore NDE1 is significant for both normal brain development and related disorders.
