The proteins MMP1 MMP9 and MMP13 belong to the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family and function mainly as enzymes that degrade various components of the extracellular matrix. MMP1 also known as collagenase-1 has a mass of approximately 54 kDa and primarily targets interstitial collagen. MMP9 known as gelatinase B is about 92 kDa and digests denatured collagen (gelatin) and elastin. MMP13 or collagenase-3 is around 60 kDa and degrades type II collagen among other substrates.
