The Adenosine A3 Receptor (A3AR) also known as A3 adenosine receptor is a member of the G-protein-coupled receptor family. This receptor couples with Gi proteins to exert its effects. The receptor has a molecular weight of approximately 37 kDa. It is expressed in a variety of tissues including the heart liver lung and immune system cells. A3AR's activity involves binding with adenosine molecules which modulates different cellular responses.
Biological function summary
This receptor mediates several processes by interacting with specific ligands. A3AR is not a part of a larger receptor complex but plays a significant role in modulating inflammation and immune response. The receptor contributes to processes like cell proliferation apoptosis and protection against tissue damage. Its activation generally promotes anti-inflammatory effects making it a target for therapeutic research.
Pathways
Many important biological activities are associated with the adenosine signaling pathway. A3AR plays an essential role in the regulation of the inflammatory response and the apoptosis pathway. Through these pathways it interacts with various proteins such as adenylyl cyclase which responds to ligand binding affecting cAMP levels in cells. The receptor's influence on immune cell function links it to other adenosine receptor subtypes.
Several conditions exhibit A3AR involvement such as rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. A3AR's anti-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic characteristics make it a point of interest for modulating immune-related disorders. Research also explores its connection with proteins like NF-κB due to their role in inflammation and cancer progression. Overall A3AR remains an active target for therapeutic strategies aiming to control these diseases.
