Eosinophils and mast cells play important roles in immune response. Eosinophils stain red with eosin which is why they are called "eosinophilic". These granular cells possess a mass of approximately 20-25 picograms per cell and are mainly expressed in the gut mucosa respiratory tract and bloodstream. Mast cells known alternatively as mastocytes are larger than eosinophils and found in tissues such as connective tissue and mucosal surfaces. Both cell types arise from hematopoietic progenitor cells in the bone marrow and are central to inflammatory processes.
Biological function summary
Eosinophils mediate defense against parasitic infections and contribute to allergic reactions through the release of granule proteins like major basic protein and eosinophil peroxidase. They do not operate as part of a complex. Mast cells on the other hand are critical in both innate and adaptive immunity. Their large granules contain histamine and heparin which they release upon activation. Mast cells also interact with fibroblasts eosinophils and T cells in the immune response.
Pathways
Both eosinophils and mast cells play roles in the inflammatory and allergic response pathways. Eosinophils are key components in the Th2-mediated immune response collaborating with interleukins like IL-5 and IL-4. Mast cells involve themselves in the degranulation pathway closely working with IgE antibodies. Their network includes interactions with mast cell tryptase and leukotrienes which are important in propagating the inflammatory response.
Eosinophils and mast cells link to asthma and allergic rhinitis. Elevated levels of eosinophils characterized by eosinophilia correlate with asthma severity. The eosinophil peroxidase protein plays a significant role in tissue damage within asthmatic airways. Mast cells contribute to allergic rhinitis by releasing histamine causing symptoms like itching and nasal congestion. Their interaction with IgE highlights their participation in these allergic responses.
