Beta Sarcoglycan is a glycoprotein that has different names including 35DAG or A3b. It plays an important role in muscle cells by integrating into the sarcoglycan complex. This protein has an approximate mass of 43 kDa. It is mainly expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues. Beta Sarcoglycan provides structural support to the muscle cell membrane by linking inside the dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex (DGC).
Biological function summary
Beta Sarcoglycan acts to maintain the stability of the muscle cell's sarcolemma. It forms part of the sarcoglycan complex which is one component of a larger dystrophin-glycoprotein complex. This complex protects muscle fibers from the stress of contraction. By ensuring the integrity of the muscle membrane Beta Sarcoglycan contributes to muscle fiber repair and regeneration reducing the risk of damage from repetitive use.
Pathways
Beta Sarcoglycan belongs to the dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex playing a role in the linkage between the cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix. This involvement occurs primarily in the DGC signaling pathway. The interaction with dystrophin and other sarcoglycans ensures effective signal transduction and mechanical stability during muscle contraction. It relates to proteins including dystrophin itself and other sarcoglycans like alpha and gamma that cooperate in the same pathway.
Beta Sarcoglycan connects closely to limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD). Mutations in the gene encoding this protein lead to muscle weakness and degeneration characteristic of LGMD. It has a direct relationship with other sarcoglycans like gamma and alpha as defects in these proteins can cause similar dystrophic conditions. The impaired function of Beta Sarcoglycan results in the breakdown of muscle membrane integrity contributing to the progression of the disease.
