MED31 also known as Mediator complex subunit 31 is a small protein with a molecular mass of approximately 20 kDa. This protein is a component of the Mediator complex which plays an important role in transcription regulation. MED31 is ubiquitously expressed in various tissues indicating its importance in fundamental cellular processes. The Mediator complex where MED31 resides acts as a bridge conveying information from gene-specific regulatory proteins to the RNA polymerase II machinery facilitating successful transcription initiation.
