ODAM also known as odontogenic ameloblast-associated protein has a molecular mass of approximately 51 kDa. It is mainly expressed in the enamel organ of developing teeth and in specific epithelial tissues. ODAM plays a role in enamel formation by interacting with proteins in the enamel matrix. Researchers have observed its expression in other body sites including salivary glands and some epithelial tumors which suggests a broader functional significance.
Biological function summary
This protein associates with cell adhesion and migration processes. ODAM can bind to integrins which supports cellular structures and influences movement. In dental tissue it collaborates with other proteins in enamel formation. Studies also indicate that ODAM might perform additional roles in maintaining epithelial cell integrity in various tissues. These findings highlight ODAM’s potential significance beyond dental applications.
Pathways
ODAM interacts with key regulators in the enamel secretion pathway and cell adhesion pathways. It shares connections with proteins such as amelogenin in enamel formation pathways. ODAM’s interaction with integrin complexes links it further to cellular adhesion pathways influencing interactions between cells and their extracellular environments. These pathways highlight ODAM's role in both developmental and structural contexts within tissues.
ODAM shows associations with ameloblastoma a type of benign odontogenic tumor and certain epithelial cancers. Its expression levels can indicate tumor presence or progression especially in oral cancers. In these conditions ODAM may interact with other markers such as keratin pointing to its potential value in diagnosis and treatment evaluation. These connections secure ODAM as a protein of interest in both dental health and oncology research.
