EHF also known as Ets homologous factor is a transcription factor within the ETS family featuring a mass of approximately 37 kDa. EHF regulates gene expression by binding to DNA sequences known as ETS motifs and influences the transcriptional processes. It exhibits significant expression in epithelial tissues including the lungs and esophagus indicating its importance in cellular activities within these tissues.
Biological function summary
This protein contributes to the regulation of epithelial cell differentiation and proliferation. EHF is not generally known to be a part of specific protein complexes but works closely with other ETS family transcription factors to exert its effects on target genes. Its influence extends to controlling factors that maintain epithelial integrity and function making it important for normal tissue development and homeostasis.
Pathways
EHF impacts gene expression involved in the growth signaling and differentiation. It participates chiefly in pathways such as the MAPK/ERK pathway influencing cell cycle regulation and response to growth stimuli. EHF interacts with various MAPK proteins coordinating cellular responses that dictate epithelial cell fate decisions.
EHF correlates with conditions like cancer and inflammatory disorders. Aberrant EHF expression links to certain malignancies including lung and esophageal cancers where it may act as a tumor suppressor or promoter depending on the context. In inflammatory disorders dysregulation of EHF expression affects pathways alongside proteins such as NF-kB contributing to chronic inflammation and disease progression.
