CENPI also known as centromere protein I is part of the CENP family and plays a mechanical role in centromere assembly and function. It has a molecular mass of approximately 97 kDa. CENPI is expressed in various tissues but it shows higher expression levels in proliferating cells especially during cell division. It localizes to the centromere region of chromosomes and is essential for the proper functioning of the kinetochore the protein structure on chromosomes where spindle fibers attach during cell division.
Biological function summary
The role of CENPI involves its participation in the CENP-A nucleosome-associated complex. This complex is essential for the recruitment of other kinetochore proteins ensuring accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis.
