CR1L also known as CR1-like or C3b/C4b receptor 1-like is a protein encoded by the CR1L gene. This protein functions mechanically as a receptor that interacts specifically with complement components C3b and C4b playing roles in immune complex processing. The molecular mass of CR1L is approximately 130 kDa. Expression of CR1L occurs mostly in the liver certain cells of the hematopoietic lineage and in platelets.
Biological function summary
CR1L acts as part of the immune system by binding to complement fragments on opsonized pathogens which facilitates their clearance. It forms part of a receptor complex that clears immune complexes and helps in modulating the complement cascade. CR1L's involvement in complement regulation highlights its contribution to preventing excessive inflammation and protecting host tissues during immune defense.
Pathways
CR1L plays a significant role in the complement activation pathway specifically in classical and alternative pathways. These pathways involve proteins such as factor H and factor I which work alongside CR1L to ensure proper regulation of complement activity. By binding C3b and C4b CR1L helps in the breakdown of these components and assists in maintaining homeostasis by moderating complement activity.
CR1L associates with autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. These disorders often involve dysregulation of complement activity. CR1L interacts with other complement regulatory proteins such as complement receptor 2 (CR2) in these contexts where imbalances in complement system function can lead to tissue damage and inflammation.
