RD3 also known as retinol dehydrogenase 3 is a critical protein in visual processes. It possesses a molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. RD3 is expressed mainly in retinal tissues where it plays an important role. The protein is necessary for proper phototransduction through its role in the retinoid cycle which is important for our visual perception.
Biological function summary
RD3 interacts with other proteins and retinoid intermediates to facilitate the efficient conversion of all-trans-retinol into 11-cis-retinal. This function supports the regeneration of visual pigments critical for light absorption. RD3 does not function as part of a larger complex; instead it works independently in its enzymatic role. Its activity ensures continuous visual cycle operation which is fundamental for maintaining normal vision.
Pathways
RD3 operates within the visual cycle known as the retinoid cycle. This cycle is essential for converting light into visual signals in the retina. RD3 is closely related to proteins like RDH5 in this cycle to maintain the necessary retinoid balance. RDH5 works alongside RD3 reflecting the intricate network of enzymes responsible for recycling visual pigments that detect light.
RD3's function is linked to retinal dystrophies. Mutations or dysfunctions in RD3 can lead to severe vision impairments such as Leber congenial amaurosis a hereditary retinal degenerative disorder. Furthermore RD3's relationship with RDH5 can influence the severity of visual impairment as both proteins are important for the retinoid cycle highlighting the importance of RD3 in maintaining ocular health.
