Ninjurin2 also known as NINJ2 is a member of the Ninjurin protein family. It weighs approximately 16 kDa and mainly expresses in nerve tissues and some peripheral organs. Ninjurin2 is a transmembrane protein that plays a role in cell adhesion and migration. It interacts with the extracellular matrix and supports the interaction between cells. The protein’s structural features include hydrophobic domains that aid in this binding.
Biological function summary
Ninjurin2 contributes to the repair and regeneration of nerve tissues. It actively engages in cellular communication promoting neurogenesis and synapse formation in the nervous system. Ninjurin2 is not known as part of a larger protein complex but it functions alongside molecules involved in cellular regeneration. Research suggests a significant involvement in the modulation of immune responses interfacing with immune cells during injury response.
Pathways
Ninjurin2 functions within important neural and immune signaling routes. It participates in the neuroplasticity pathway which is critical for healing neural injuries and supports the immune surveillance system by communicating with cytokines. The protein works closely with other related proteins like Ninjurin1 which shares similar cellular roles as well as integrins which help mediate its cellular adhesion functions.
Ninjurin2 has been linked to conditions related to nerve damage and inflammation such as neurodegenerative disorders and chronic inflammatory diseases. In cases of neurodegenerative disorders abnormal Ninjurin2 function may affect neuron durability and regeneration. Connections with inflammatory diseases arise due to its role in immune response modulation. Ninjurin2’s interaction with other proteins in these contexts notably MyD88 affects cellular responses to injury and subsequent recovery processes.
