SELO also known as selenoprotein O is a protein that plays a role in cellular redox balance. The human SELO protein has a predicted mass of approximately 98 kDa. It is expressed in several tissues including the heart and skeletal muscle suggesting its importance in energy-demanding organs. The expression pattern indicates its involvement in stress response and maintenance of cellular homeostasis.
Biological function summary
SELO functions in redox homeostasis by modulating oxidative stress within cells. It participates in mitochondrial processes as it localizes predominantly within mitochondria. SELO is also a part of a protein complex where it interacts with thioredoxin and glutathione systems. This activity influences redox signaling and defends against damage to cellular components caused by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS).
Pathways
The SELO protein plays a critical role in cellular antioxidant pathways. It interacts with the thioredoxin pathway an important element in maintaining the redox environment of the cell. SELO may have associations with proteins like thioredoxin reductase and peroxiredoxins which also operate within these antioxidant systems. This interaction helps regulate cellular responses to oxidative stress impacting overall cell survival and function.
SELO's involvement in oxidative stress management links it to conditions where oxidative damage is prevalent. Research highlights its potential role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's where oxidative stress contributes to neuronal damage. SELO can also intersect with proteins like tau and amyloid-beta which are important in Alzheimer’s pathology. Understanding SELO's role in these disease processes could open avenues for therapeutic interventions targeting oxidative stress.
