Supplementary Information:
This supplementary information is collated from multiple sources and compiled automatically.
The Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor M5 also known as CHRM5 or the M5 receptor acts as a G protein-coupled receptor. This receptor binds acetylcholine a neurotransmitter and plays an important role in modulating neural activity. The M5 receptor has a molecular mass of approximately 61 kDa. Expression of the M5 receptor is found mainly in the brain areas such as the substantia nigra and midbrain dopaminergic neurons as well as in the vascular endothelium.
Biological function summary
The M5 receptor influences various physiological processes through its receptor activity. It affects functions like dopamine release which is important for neural pathways involved in reward and addiction. The M5 receptor does not operate as part of a larger receptor complex but interacts functionally with other muscarinic receptor subtypes contributing to the modulation of central nervous system activities.
Pathways
The M5 receptor plays a role in the dopaminergic signaling pathway and the phosphoinositide pathway. These pathways are important for regulating neurotransmission and vasodilation. Other proteins it interacts with in these pathways include D1-like dopamine receptors which collaborate in controlling neuronal excitability and blood flow.
The M5 receptor is linked to conditions such as addiction and schizophrenia. In addiction it interacts with the dopaminergic system while in schizophrenia altered M5 receptor function affects neural circuits. Furthermore its interaction with dopamine receptors highlights its potential involvement in these neurological disorders suggesting therapeutic targets for these conditions.
