KLF7 also known as Kruppel-like factor 7 is a transcription factor that plays an important role in cellular regulation. It carries a mass of approximately 45 kDa and is expressed in a variety of tissue types most notably in neural tissues. KLF7 is one of the KLF family proteins characterized by the presence of three C2H2 zinc fingers that facilitate DNA binding. It primarily regulates gene expression by binding to GC-rich regions of DNA influencing the transcription of specific target genes.
Biological function summary
KLF7 facilitates neuronal and adipocyte differentiation and development. Its involvement in these processes highlights its role in critical developmental phases. Although there is limited information about its involvement in multi-protein complexes its function as a transcription factor suggests that it likely interacts with other proteins involved in gene regulation. By modulating gene expression patterns KLF7 contributes to the establishment of cell identity and functionality.
Pathways
KLF7 is heavily engaged in the pathways of neural development and adipogenesis. It is intricately linked with the Notch signaling pathway where it influences the expression of genes involved in cell differentiation. Furthermore KLF7 interacts with other transcription factors such as KLF4 and KLF5 within these pathways collectively shaping cell fate decisions and development outcomes. This interconnectedness highlights KLF7's comprehensive influence over significant physiological processes.
KLF7 has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases and obesity. In Alzheimer's disease for instance KLF7 expression changes are observed suggesting its potential role in disease progression. This link to Alzheimer's positions KLF7 alongside proteins like APP which are also affected in such conditions. Additionally in obesity alterations in KLF7 expression can affect adipogenesis making it closely associated with metabolic regulation and related disorders. The protein's involvement in these conditions makes it a potential target for therapeutic intervention.
