Product details:
Fructose-6-Phosphate Assay Kit (ab204720) is a fluorescence based simple, highly sensitive and rapid means of quantifying fructose-6-phosphate (F6P) in a variety of samples. In the assay, F6P is converted to glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) which is subsequently oxidized with the generation of a fluorescent product. This assay kit can detect F6P in the range of 0.01 to 0.5 nmoles with detection sensitivity 1 uM of F6P.
Other Notes
This product was previously called K689 Biovision PicoProbe Fructose-6-Phosphate Fluorometric Assay Kit. Biovision was acquired by Abcam in 2021.
Fructose-6-phosphate (F6P) is an important intermediate in the glycolytic pathway which leads from glucose to pyruvate. It is formed from glucose-6-phosphate and is further phosphorylated to fructose-1,6-diphosphate which is subsequently cleaved to glyceraldehyde phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. The transformation of glucose-6-phosphate is controlled by phosphoglucose isomerase, a very interesting enzyme in that it possesses multiple functions, as an isomerase, a neuroleukin, an autocrine motility factor and a differentiation and maturation mediator.

Fructose-6-phosphate also known as F6P is an important intermediate in the glycolysis and gluconeogenesis pathways. It has a molecular mass of approximately 260.1 g/mol. This metabolite is primarily expressed in cellular cytoplasm where it is involved in biochemical transformations necessary for energy production. Although it does not have specified protein complex associations fructose-6-phosphate remains an integral compound in metabolic processes.
Biological function summary
Fructose-6-phosphate plays a significant role in carbohydrate metabolism. It serves as a substrate for numerous reactions including the conversion from glucose-6-phosphate to fructose-6-phosphate an important step catalyzed by the enzyme phosphoglucose isomerase. Fructose-6-phosphate's involvement in these reactions makes it essential for balancing energy through anabolic and catabolic activities.
Pathways
Fructose-6-phosphate is highly involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. In glycolysis it is further converted to fructose-16-bisphosphate a reaction facilitated by phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) an enzyme that plays a critical role in regulating the pathway. Additionally in gluconeogenesis fructose-6-phosphate converts back to glucose-6-phosphate functioning in reverse to produce glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors.
Alterations in the metabolism of fructose-6-phosphate have been linked to diabetes and cancer. In diabetes abnormal regulation of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis can affect blood sugar levels where proteins like PFK-1 and phosphoglucose isomerase may play a part. Understanding these connections provides insight into developing therapies for managing metabolic disorders.
